Case study: Programme leadership for EU sustainable finance and climate risk

Date:August 6, 2024

Situation

A National Development Bank aimed to monitor, assess and implement the EU Action Plan on Sustainable Finance, while embedding environmental and climate risk into their operations. This comprehensive, bank-wide program was designed to ensure compliance with relevant EU regulations and identify related opportunities and benefits.

Approach

Projective Group was engaged to lead the programme, acting as the Programme Management Office (PMO) and providing ongoing support. The approach and key activities included:

  1. Regulatory compliance and opportunity identification:

The bank aimed to comply with multiple EU regulations, including CSRD, SFDR, Taxonomy Regulation, Climate & Environmental Risk, Pillar 3 ESG Risks, and the EU Green Bond Standard. We helped it achieve this by identifying opportunities and benefits associated with these regulations, and by embedding environmental and climate-related risks within governance, risk management, strategy, reporting, and daily management.

  1. Project management and expertise deployment:

Our consultants deployed Programme Managers and Subject Matter Experts to the bank’s Strategy and Risk teams. Alongside, we supported the ongoing implementation of the programme, while identifying and creating synergies, empowering internal resources to enable implementation and compliance without imposing undue burden and cost on staff and the organisation.

  1. Stakeholder engagement and communication:

We implemented an internal stakeholder engagement and communication programme and ensured adequate knowledge of the regulations and their impact on the organisation.

Result

The programme delivered several key outcomes. First and foremost, we developed a strategic plan to implement and comply with relevant EU Sustainable Finance Regulations. Also, we achieved a first reporting under the SFDR, and established ongoing reporting processes under the EU Taxonomy. To ensure the bank would be able to conduct these reporting themselves, we developed and deployed new, multi-functional tools to assist with environmental and climate risk management and other regulatory requirements.

This case study highlights our comprehensive approach to managing complex regulatory compliance projects, enabling our clients to achieve strategic goals efficiently and effectively.
