Carla Vermetten: ”I am kept on my toes by colleagues from different backgrounds”

Date:November 29, 2021

Carla Vermetten has over 30 years of experience in finance. Before she joined Projective Group in 2017, she already worked as a lawyer at various financial companies. Both clients and colleagues therefore enjoy using her expertise. ”I try not only to make sure everything is legally correct, but also to think about how to present my advice in an understandable way.”

What exactly do you do at Projective Group?

“As a legal & regulatory consultant, I find myself on the legal side of compliance. Unlike my colleagues who fill the compliance function at financial companies, I mainly deal with legal advice. My expertise is in the field of regulatory law, especially in the investment and financial services industry. I regularly contribute to licence applications, for example by advising on scope issues or reviewing policy documents. I also handle many ad hoc queries. These can be questions that clients ask via our website or legal issues that are too specific for my compliance colleagues.I also provide on-call legal support to a regular group of clients. I really enjoy this variation between ad hoc thinking along with different organisations on the one hand and supporting regular clients on the other. As a trusted advisor, I get to know my clients well.”

What makes you a good consultant?

”Firstly, of course, my knowledge and experience. I have worked as a corporate lawyer, compliance professional and regulatory affairs officer at various financial companies. But personality and life experience also play an important role. I am good at putting things into perspective and don’t let myself get crazy easily. I am aware of where my expertise lies – and where I need to involve others.Furthermore, I still enjoy delving into legal issues. I know what questions to ask to get a good picture of a situation or issue. I love diving into the law and searching the literature, legislative history and case law to solve the puzzle. Many of my clients continue to seek cooperation, even when they are with a new employer years later. I take that as a great compliment.”

As a trusted advisor, I get to know my clients well.

”A lawyer is not expected to use Jip and Janneke (simple) language. Nevertheless, I try to write down complex legal advice as simply as possible, with a logical structure and layout. But also by using flow charts, step-by-step plans or checklists. When I have come to a preliminary advice, I always have it proofread by a colleague. Then I send the draft to the client. They then have the chance to ask questions, so I can clarify any ambiguities.

You have a great amount of knowledge and experience. Why don’t you start for yourself?

”I enjoy being part of a team way too much. Even though we all have our own work and don’t see each other every day, I have a strong group feeling with my Risk&Compliance colleagues. This is further boosted by regular get-togethers, knowledge-sharing sessions and outings. I am kept on my toes by compliance officers, students and consultants whose backgrounds differ from mine. This ensures that I broaden my view and am open to opportunities I would not have thought of before myself. Together, we possess a huge source of knowledge and experience. We complement each other well and nobody is afraid to help a colleague. You don’t have all that when you are self-employed. At Projective Group, I have the ideal balance between working together on large projects and solving issues independently. I can also choose assignments that suit me, work flexibly and organise my own schedule. I really like this autonomy.”
